Your Turn! (October 2009)

Okay, we want to hear what you think! Do you have an all-time favorite Muse article? What recent articles have you really loved? What articles have you really not loved? (Be nice!)

And finally, what would you like to read about next in Muse? (Please don't say Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Twilight, or that one with the fighting cats. This is a NONfiction magazine. If you really want to talk about books, head over to the Kokonino County Library!)

That "one with the fighting cats" is one of my favorite series!!! I was going to say something else, but now you've insulted the dear Warriors, here goes: MY LEAST FAVORITE MUSE MAGAZINE IS ANYTHING WITH THE EDITORS IN IT!!!!!!!!!

Watch out; we have the power to not publish your comments! :) --Ed.

I love every article in Muse! Some articles I would particularly like to see are:

- An issue about pies! It doesn't seem deep enough at first glance, but it's actually very interesting. In her book CookWise, Shirley O. Corriher explains a lot of neat stuff about the science of baking -- including baking pies -- and that could be good article material. There could also be an interview with Larry Gonick, and then we could find out how he thought up the whole pie theme. Plus, you could add an article about pi, the number. PIES ARE AWESOME!

- I agree with someone who suggested once that there should be a mag with articles for each Muse -- i.e. articles about tricks, astronomy, hardware, software, bad poetry (?!?), getting along with people, factoids, plants, and animals. It would be fun!

- How about an issue with articles written entirely by readers? Maybe even Kokopelli and Company could be drawn by a reader -- it could be like a contest -- and the letters could be from the editors!

Changing the subject a little, my favorite Muse is Urania and I think Kokopelli is overappreciated. Who's with (and not with) me here?

I also agree with someone who said that the Muses should post some comments. Although the editors apparently found this submission cryptic, I would like to explain. On this website, although Musers and Editors discuss many super topics, the Muses appear silent. Why can't they reply to our comments (like this one)? Surely Aeiou can rig up a connection! Please?

YES!! Finally, someone who appreciares Urania!! Koko deserves punishment for pieing her so many times. Like, say, Chad can take all his pies while Mimi pretends to be friends with him. Aeiou can gather info from the Internet against him. Urania can be lookout with her telescope. Feather and Bo can be spies (pretending to stand there but secretly following our target). Kokopelli himself can't read, so he won't know anything about THE PLAN- unless someone spills the beans on me... I know I am forgetting someone in THE PLAN, but who?? Please let me know. And speaking of the Muses commenting... they already do! Aeiou said "w00t" to me- see the "FEEDBACK!" thingy on the side of this thread- and I have yet to find out what that means, but it's a start!:) I have taken to using emoticons as a tribute to Aeiou.

:) --Aeiou

Mango,

Great plan!!!!!!! You asked who wasn't in THE PLAN, and they're Pwt... maybe if Kokopelli struggles Pwt can try to catch him with his net... and Crraw, but Crraw will be busy translating for Aeiou.

I can't believe you like Urania. Nobody likes Urania, almost! Do you think Koko pies her more than he does the others? I do.

Aeiou, since you seem to be the only Muse reading these, give my adoration to all the Muses -- except Koko. He's too annoying.

And Frodo'sFC, it's completely OK to be obsessed with LOTR...in my book anyway! Happy reading! :-D

Looking at my previous post, I realized I must not have made it clear that I like Urania too!!!!!!!! I think we need to make her a slogan. Only problem is, what does "Urania" rhyme with? Let's see, "Urania knows more about Uranus than Kokopelli does?" I don't think that one is going to go over very well...

Oh, and just to let you know, for the last September issue, I'm the one who sent in the picute of the house made with the gumdrops, marshmallows, and toothpicks... It actually collapsed  about an hour after I took a picture of it! Talk about being lucky, right? :)

I'd like an article about space/time/einstein, quantum physics and computer animation. My favorite article(s), hmm, I loved the lying, the skating and the black hole issues, but those are all older ones.

One thing I would like is a page/column with updates on past articles. For instance, in 2003 (I think), there was an article about crazy earth theories (hollow, donut-shaped) which mentioned a cruise to find the hole on the north pole planned for 2006. It's all over now, but it would be interesting to hear about these things.

Well I would like an article on nuclear power. Or a whole issue, debating the pros and cons of it- that would be awesome. Ever since my trip to the power plant, I have decided that nuclear power is REALLY COOL, but it is dangerous and that is why a whole issue would be nice. I think it's cool how they split atoms to make energy.

My favorite Muse article was definetely the Placebo Effect, but I became a hero with The Twelve Labors of Hercules!!! Those were both very good, and gripped my attention more than the others (not to be mean). I also liked Empty Street, Blank Canvas.

I didn't really like the DIY BIO article (sorry, Phil McKenna), or the One on the whale barf.... a little too disgusting. :-P

I'd really like to read about the jobs of those people who, along the borders of countries, check for drugs and other harmful things like coke in people's cars, combined with the jobs of people at airports. How's that for an interesting job? I'd also like to be an editor for a manga series.

Let's have an article on something historical! All I've really seen lately has been science articles or articles on modern weird artistic things, and while they are brilliant as always, what I'm really interested in is cool history! Remember your article on that medicine they claimed cured everything but really had a huge concentration of sulfide, I think, and started killing people? (My mom gave the issue to the local library, so I can't remember much of it. ): ) Anyway, that was reeeally cool. I also loved the article way, way back on swordfighting in movies, which was also amazing. (MY NAME IS INIGO MONTOYA! YOU KILLED MY FATHER! PREPARE TO DIE!) Anyway, anything on articles non-scientific or modern-artistic would be lovely. Especially history. Also, non-serious articles. The one on cats creating modern art? Excellent. The one in the back-to-school/Mona Lisa with the kid giving himself an SAT?UNBELIEVABLY BRILLIANT. (So was that entire issue, actually.)

By the way, I happen to think Koko is amazing, and have desperately wanted to pie anyone in real life for far too long. Hi Koko! Would you like to have a pie-eating contest?

ok, so i have some questions for the editors. first of all, why can't aeiou talk? did one of chad's projects go wrong or something? and also, i noticed that mimi is not in kokopelli and company anymore. why not? and finally, i CAN NOT figure out how to renew my subscription. how do you do that? and also, why does koko always throw pies? i mean, i know he is the trickster muse, but why pies? i mean, why not whoopee cushions instead? and is bo a girl or boy? i would appreaciate it if you guys answered.

Hi Elizabeth! Bo here. I'm a girl, and I'll try not to be offended by your question. Now on to your other questions: Mimi is still around; I guess she's just been shy recently. I don't know why Aeiou doesn't talk; she never told me. I also don't know why Koko throws pies, but please don't give him any ideas about whoopee cushions!

I don't know if anyone's noticed this, but Muse seems to be evolution oriented. I just think it would be nice to get some perspective form the other camp, that is to say, intelligent design. It seems to me that most magazines and periodicals are ignoring all the flaws or mistakes in Darwinism and extolling its virtues (even some made up virtues!). Perhaps Muse could break this cycle and publish somthing from an intelligent design perspective. Or provide a transcript from a Creation Vs. Evolution debate.

Will, I agree. I don't want to say any more for fear of starting a debate, but I agree. Muse needs to be as honest and straightforward about the Creation vs. Evolution facts as it is about everything else.

Respectfully,

What an awesome idea! I completely agree! An article like that would be the perfect topic for Muse--fun, thought-provoking, and completely unaverage. Because isn't that what Muse is all about? Breaking the mold by making us think in new ways? :-)

I think that, if you must continue to do only nine issues a year, you could have a program where we get back issues (maybe reprints) on off months. I suppose we'd have to pay a little more, but for insane Muse devotees like me who dream about getting the first issue (where CAN I get that?), it might be worth it.

Also on the topic of back issues, why not do bound volumes? A lot of adult magazines with less than a quarter of Muse's coolness and rereadability do that, so why not Muse? And would it be possible to start with the very first year? *puppy eyes* Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease?

Thanks for the suggestions! If you want to purchase back issues (or request them for Christmas!), you can find almost all of them at http://www.cobblestonepub.com/issue/mus#backissues. --Ed.

They took one whole year to arrive after ordering. :-( They were incredible, though, as only Muse can be! (One of them was the one about parasites. I was skittish and jumpy for days.) :-)

So, what say you, fellow Musers? Shall we rise up as one demanding back issues in off months? Or shall we leave our fate to the possiblity of what might happen if, one day, we DON'T know who exactly first painted a moustache on the Mona Lisa?

(P.S. For the answer, see the Mona Lisa issue from 2004!)

I'm sure we don't have enough back issues in storage to mail to all our subscribers! But you can always order back issues at http://www.cobblestonepub.com/issue/mus#backissues. --Ed.

Well, what articles did I like recently? I must say, the one about deadly plants was quite interesting, but perhaps that's my morbidness coming through.

What would I like as an article or issue? Well, I'd certainly enjoy one about Charles Dodgson, also known as Lewis Carroll. The man who wrote "Alice In Wonderland". I'm mad, you're mad we're all mad here.

However, an article about Wikipedia would be greatly admired. Then I can tell my teachers how it's more accurate than many encyclopedias.

Or an article about how Muse is published, which would be interesting. Progressing from thinking of ideas for the issue, to finding articles, to designing graphics, to publishing.

But, I just want to say a great big thanks to all the editors who make Muse possible. Rarely do you see a letter addressed to "The Editors". They are my favorite Muse-being. But that might be my natural admiration for the underdogs.

Thanks for the shout-out! --Ed.

Go Editors!

Ach, sorry if I'm posting twice, but I forgot to post the article I enjoyed least. It would have to be the article written by autistics. They are great people, and I mean no offense to them, but their bios seemed to say that autism is a blessing, that lets you think in interesting ways. In most cases, aside from high functioning autistics, it's not. At young ages, people with severe autism cannot communicate with the outside world. When they get older, they still have hard times fitting in, and being shunned or made fun of by their classmates. You did have a good article, after that, which almost made up for that mistake, but that article is not really a good show of people with autism. It's the icing without the cake, so to speak. No offense to autistics intended, but I have to say that showed a very small part of autism, and is a poor representation.

Hi Muses and Editors! I really enjoyed your article about organ transplants and the seat of the soul debate. I also liked the Tiktaalik article (I read Your Inner Fish later - great book!), the excerpts from Shaun Tan's The Arrival, the article about the glass flowers at Harvard, and many more.

Do you remember the issue with the article about Alex the African gray parrot and Dr. Irene Pepperberg? I just wanted to let the editors know that another magazine from the Cricket Magazine Group, Spider, actually did an article about Alex that was very similar to the one published in Muse a few years ago. I was at the time subscribed to Spider, so I actually have both magazines! Did the Muse editors know this?

Possible topics for future issues...I would really be interested in an article about all of Da Vinci's plans for futuristic machines that were never built. I'd also love to see an article about the possibility of space settlement.

Kokopelli, in class we studied the Anasazi tribes of the Four Corners Region. Apparently these tribes were the ones who made you up, although they portrayed you as a hunchback. Have you ever seen their cave drawings of you?

I would like to see an article on Egypt (after reading The Red Pyramid, I'm a bit obsessed!:)) Also, an article on First Lego League, computers, or robots would be great. I am in FLL myself and am obessed with that too. Heh... or maybe ancient Egyptian robots! That don't exist! And are simply a figment of my overreacting and overimaginitive brain! I don't know where the overreacting part fits in... maybe I was overreacting...:) And, eds- everyone in my class says I'm crazy. I know this already. Do you have any way I can tell them to stop being so obvious without appearing too normal?

Maybe you could build a cool robot to be your class mascot. Then no one would complain! --Ed.

You should write an article about the hazards of makeup. For example, the whole reason Buddy Ebson isn't the Tin Man in the movie the Wizard of Oz and Jack Haley is, is because of makeup. Buddy Ebson had to be rushed to the hospital and he nearly died. He inhaled the aluminum powder on his face, so Jack Haley wore aluminum paste in the movie, which is less easy to inhale than aluminum powder.

Could you do an article about Guardians of GaHoole and Owls? Like, you could do an interview with the author or something, you could do an article about REAL owls, you could do a thing about the movie, you could do a thing about CGI Animation (because the movie is computer animated), and you could do a thing about bird flight, with Crraw as host, because he's the only bird with flight (sorry, Feather. Maybe you could do something about what plants birds eat?)

And maybe you could tie Harry Potter in there somewhere, you know, with the owl pets and things.... JUST SAYING! 'cause harry potter rocks...

Okay, sorry for posting twice in a row, but i forgot to say my favorite issue, and my least favorite -

- I DON'T HAVE A LEAST FAVORITE! This might be due to the fact that i got muse for a year, my subscription ran out (NOOOOOO), but we were moving in a few months, then we moved, and were rather slow in the renewing-of-the-awesome-magazine-subscription. But, in all the issues i HAVE got, i like them all! I especially loved the issue about politics, with the sort of collage-picture of Bush on the cover - i think it was called "Point, Click, Vote?" or something along those lines. IT WAS AWESOME. I loved it!

Sadly , I for the life of me cannot remember what happened to it, and i am forced to conclude that it was thrown out because it got torn up. Or something. So now i have to order a back issue of it.... BUT IT WILL BE WORTH IT!

I also really loved the "Naming Names" issue from June/July 2010. I liked the "The Known World" article talking about how even though cultures speak different languages, they all come up with similar sounding names because they just... fit. And i liked the Muses in the background of the articles - I laughed so hard when Aeiou was holding Kokopelli over the edge of that cliff while Crraw translated "Aeiou says thou shalt be little tushie popsplat if thou shuttest not up!" after Koko "renamed" her "the slimy, villanous sir sneavel!" (If i sound insane, then check pages 34-35 in "Naming Names".)

MUSE ROCKS!

Warriors! Fighting cats! *spits out ridicoulously large hairball* Puny Twolegs, go to the Dark Forest! But never mind. I would like to see an issue on SPIDERS! Lots and lots of the good little tykes! Arachne, consider this a tribute! Psedvrlil urels! Does 1984 count? Wait, what about "The Three Musketeers"! Mon dieu! Must I ramble on? I especially would like plate spiders on there! They are unrecognized!

PS. Donan S, if thisn reaches you, watch out for Fanmalia pittus! The nasty spider-bullies are poisonous!

PPS. G stands for GRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!
