Who's Normal? (January 2010)

The Muses have been trying to decide which one of them is the most normal. Unfortunately, none of them can make a very good argument for their own "normalness." What about you, dear Muse readers? Are you the "weird one" in your group of friends? Do you consider yourself normal? What defines "normal" behavior? When you think about it, is anyone really normal?

(...and more importantly, which resident of Kokonino County gets your vote for Most Normal?)

There is no such thing as "normal." If there were, all the "normal" people, aka the larger group, would go around doing the exact same thing, while the "weird" people would do something else. No, there is no normal, since everyone is different in their own way. In that respect, I say that all the Muses are "normal" Muses, but none of them are truly "normal."

Well, I hate to say this, but I think Mimi is the most 'normal'... yeah... the one with the spiky hat/hair/feathers, the triangular face, and the occasional lack of mouth. Tells you something about the 'normalcy' quotient of the rest of the Muses, eh?

Ok, so what is normal? Webster's Dictionary defines it as "of, relating to, or characterized by average intelligence or development." By that token many people would be normal. But normal is not 'average', not literally anyway. The word "normal" carries with it the connotation of being without serious problems, e.g. if your doctor was to say to you, "Don't worry, you're normal," you'd probably be happy. But if your friend said to you, "You know, you and your family are really average," you'd probably be more offended than happy!

Our ideas of nomalness are mostly based on our society. (Then what tells our society what's normal? You ask. The media's at least part of it, I reply.) If someone walked into your school with so many brass rings around their neck that their neck appeared to be twice as long as normal (there's that word again!), you'd probably think it very strange, but among the Padung women of northern Thailand, this is completely normal.

Just as society changes, so does normalness. Things that aren't considered un-normal today would have been radical and revolting (and possibly cause for a free one-way ticket to the insane asylum) to people a hundred years ago. Does that mean that our country was less free or used less of its freedoms of thought and speech back then? No, not necessarily, just that our perception of normalness has changed (A LOT). However, society alone doesn't completely control our ideas of normalness. For instance, while this is probably not common for the rest of the country, it's pretty normal for me to walk around the house in full Renaissance garb, much more normal than it would be for me to wear Hollister or Abercrombie or Aeropostale or whatever it is they're wearing nowadays. ;-) Also, when I send text messages I actually write in English instead of garbled txt msg tlk (wich isnt rly a lngug @ all! pls! it drvs me NUTS!!)

Anyway, enough ranting. Muse, you are incredibly awesome and extremely un-normal. Which is a very good thing. (Did I just contradict myself?) I would have to say, my guess is that the average (AAGGHH) Muse reader is probably not normal (ARRRRGGH) in the standards of today's schoolkids (on the whole), because they care enough about Vitamin D or talking parrots or parasites or the Mona Lisa or undercooked eggs or slime eels or Elizabethan castles enough to spend their time reading about them. (I'm ranting again!) Mimi, you are DEFINITELY the normal-est Muse. Have a normal day (in which many weird and wonderful things happen), everyone!

You're right-normalness is not something that is the same everywhere. I prefer to think of "normal" as "something that is a standard and does not stand out in whatever area you are saying that something is normal or not normal as being  or not normal." Did that make sense? Mimi is the normalest. If you write"normal" a lot it starts to look weird.

There is no actual definition of what's normal, well there is but no one on this planet classifies as "normal" the only planet with normal people is a planet called "Camazotz" but this is a different normal everyone on Camzotz is under the direct mind control of IT and they do everything exactly on beat with the rhythmic functioning of IT.

Why would you ever want to live in a world of sameness and total organized control(unless you were from The Community)?!? If you ask me, I like the way the world is now. When you hear the word normal, most people think of the people who are well, let's put it this way, normal. There is no real form of normalness(is that a word?) because everyone has their own sense of what normal means. To me normal means like everyone else. You could also say unindividual, or a follower. So those who take all their ideas from others creations, and use them, while letting other people use them, are normal. You get it? The word normal could also mean to be yourself, because if you act like your normal self, then you are acting normal. But if you act differently from your normal self, then you are acting unormal(does unormal have two n's?). Kind of complicated, right? So I guess an easy way to put the definition of normal is to say, Everyone is normal the same way everyone is different. By the way, all the Muse characters are normal because they are all differnent from each other.

P.S. Bo is still the best. Go FACTS!!!

I think that no one is, actually, "normal" because every single person on this planet is completely unique. No one is like anybody else. I agree with Annie on that the idea of abnormalness changes with time and fashion. I know that at my school I would be considered crazy if I wore a long sweep-style dress, but just a few decades ago, it would hae been fine.

no one on this EARTH is normal. espeacially me. :) but seriously, if someone is normal, they are boring. no one at all likes them, because they are what everyone expects people to be, but not what they want someone to be as a friend. there are people that are average, but they still have their quirks. i, for example, flip out whenever i see an olive. yes. olives are disgusting. anyway, bo gets my vote, even though she is a cow. she is awesome. but she is still not normal. :( oh well.

I definately am the "weird one" in my group of friends! I mean funny weird, not weird weird. I am with Monica! She's one of the funny ones. The resident of Kokonino County that gets my vote for Most Normal is...... sorry Kokopelli........ Urania! Since no one is perfect, no one is normal. As Nathan says, "Perfect is horrible." No one is perfect! It's merely impossible. So no one is normal. So.... on a different scale..... "Vote For Urania!" My sister's vote would be Kokopelli. (Don't know why.)

Oh ya, and about the wrinkle in time debate thing (is that what it is?) You know when the get back home and land in the lettuce, wouldn't they see themselves, sitting on the wall? I don't believe that normality exists, because it is different for every person. If you took a survey to find out what kind of person most people thought of as normal, and then searched for someone who fit everyone's description, chances are, you wouldn't find anyone. Even if you did, there would be so few people that anyone you find would be so normal, it's actually weird—otherwise known as unnormal. So they wouldn't be normal at all. If you took the next-normal person, they would become the new most normal person ever. So, they, too, would be unnormally normal.  And the same goes for everyone else in the universe, too.

Even the people on Camazotz aren't normal. Since no one else is as normal as they are, they would not be normal at all.

Does that make sense?

Normal is uninduviduality. It is going along with whatever the marjority says. In that respect I am most definitely NOT NORMAL. In every way possible I am a geek and a freak. Shy of the most un-terrifying things, totally outgoing about things that would make most people scream and run. Devoted to my school work, but athletic to the point of 10.5 hours of dance a week, and when I'm not dancing that's what I'm thinking of. And then just plain random, and proud of it. I am both the weirdest and least weird in my "posse." My friends are all the crazy, goofy, smart kids in the grade, total bookworms and weirdos. I am the most so in my group. So I am the weirdest in the conventional sense. But, one girl is constantly trying to be cool (of course then she bites my arm and ruins any illusion of popularity she had) so she is the weirdest in my group's outlook on things. Ya. Confusing.

submitted by Silver, age 13, ON

I am considered the class nerd, and the class weirdo, but "normal" is something nobody in my class has. There is no "normal" in the world, only different people, and every person is so different from the next that even people who are considered "normal" have their quirks, fears, and memories that make them themselves. Even one person can change a lot over only a couple years. Sure, you can take a group of 10 people and separate them into "normal" and "weird", but that will change depending on which people you use, where the people are, what has happened in their lives- all these things come together and make it so there is no "normal". Just different people. And everyone can change.

These days, normal is what you are if you are like everybody else. If you are like everybody else, you are normal;therefore it is very hard to constantly stay normal in accordance with the latest trends. If you are normal enough, you become popular, and you can start to decide what is normal and not normal. To be abnormal is to do what everybody was doing yesterday, or what everyone will be doing tomorrow (if any of you can predict the future), or, even better, to read Muse. Normal is all a matter of perspective.
