Re-naming Names (May/June 2010)

In "The Known World," you did a little exercise and found out that some words, like "chichikia," just sound like a bird. In "The Great Spirit Names the Animal People," you read about how certain animals (supposedly) got their names. Now, it's your turn to play the name game. What animals do you think need a name update? What about your siblings, your parents, or your principal? If you're feeling ambitious, you can try to re-name all nine of the Muses. Go crazy!

Funny you should ask... My friends and I give random names to everyone. Not mean ones or anything. There's someone called Xylophone, The Penguin, Avocado, Zucchini, Red, Association, Tuna Salad...

I have my Korean name, Chi Hae, My code name, Oasis, and my childhood nickname, Hannah Banana. I have a lot more names, but those were a few examples. Also, I have names I made for people, such as Six Flags. Long story.....

Now I shall rename everyone in my family, from oldest to youngest. My dad would be called Joseph Scott. My mom would be Claudette Beth. I would be Ana Maple. My 5-year-old sister would be called Erika Bolt. My 2-year-old baby sister would be Meadow Fairy. And now my pets. My dog, named Sascha, would be renamed Abby. (I've always wanted a Doberman named Abby since I played Dog's Life on the PS2.) My birds, Edward and Bella, would be renamed Joe and June. (Randomness!) My fish, Herkey, would be renamed Doofus! (Because he needs directions by a finger to his fish food.) Now the people who don't live in my house. My nana's name would be Libby Ida. My papa's name would be Bill Fred. My aunt's name would be Amy May. There are more people, but my fingers are getting tired. (LOL! I just can't think up any more names right now.)

We call my cat Boomer Fuzzbuttt, but somehow I don't think that counts, I've always believed that his name with his old owners was better, Casey. I would love to know why some names sound right and other don't like my friend Taylor, she should be caller Laura and I called her that for months after I met her or Shelby, who should be Abigale. Somehow, I think the name for worm is just wrong! It sounds too hard, shouldn't it be something more like leekler or shroushen?

I like my name. It's uncommon, though a boy on my street has the same name! I don't think it's spelled the same, but I really don't know. It can be annoying, though, having a m & f name. My teacher thought I was a boy, and called me a "he" (If that seems confusing, I'm a homeschooler, and it was in an online class.) Needless to say, I was very insulted, and I think my teacher felt bad. Plus, it's easy to misspell, and pronounce my name. I've had it spelled Casie, and Cassey before. It's been pronouced like Cassie before too. BTW, it's said like KC, but I bet you could tell. It doesn't sprout nicknames like some, but it's easily shortened to Case. I really like my middle name. It's Marie, nothing really special, but my mom has the same middle name, as do both of my grandmothers and my great grandmother. It's pretty awesome. If I have a girl when I'm grown up, her middle name will be Marie. I like this little tradition. My name doesn't mean anything special, kind of boring, honestly. My initials are CMB, which sort of look pretty on paper, but aren't as cool as my sister's anitials which are RAB. (Like the RAB from Harry Potter. She is way lucky.) I like having a last name that starts with B, 'cause I get to come first in alphebetical order. C is a really cool letter to me. There's middle c on the piano, there's always a c on the answers to a test, (so guess which letter I pick most!) and C is a pretty letter. Well, this post is getting long, and I don't want to go on and on and on and on.

Peace!

Have you ever noticed the way authors or TV people name their villains? What makes a name 'evil'? Why is 'Voldemort' (the name) more threatening than... ummm... 'Dobby'? Are any of you people writing novels? If so, what are they about and what/why did you name your villains?

I know the above seems totes random, but I saw another Victoria and wanted to disagree with her statement that our name is boring, and then it evolved into a spazzy digression (look it up). THANK YOU!

Greetings fellow Muses and Musers!

While musing on your excellent question, I thought of the following names:

I will shortly be taking Elizabeth as my Confirmation name (I'm named after St. Anne, mother of Mary, and St. Catherine of Siena.)

I like the name Victoria because I am an anglophile.

Beatrice Westervelt would be my pen name(Beatrice from Much Ado About Nothing, Westervelt because it's my dad's middle name--his mom was Dutch.)

I also like the names Charles, Ian, and Elinor.

And for all you LOTR fans, my hobbit name is Rosie-Posie Hamwich of Buckleberry Fern.

Oh, I love giving things new names. When I'm tired enough, I'll sometimes just refer to everything and everyone as a banana, or a kitten, or "the bleh". If I'm speaking French, and I don't know a word for something, I'll just say "banane"(Banana) or "chaton" (kitten). Those words were just chosen randomly once, and I've kept using them.

The FMP is the headquarters for Flamablamulous Marshmallow. Therefore FMP stands for Flamablamulous Marshmallow Place-- their HQ. Flamablamulous Marshmallow is an orginazation of killer marshmallows that disguise themselves as evil HPBs. The real HPBs are fighting the Flamablamulous Marshmallow monsters in the FMP, where the Muses send the unwanted fan mail to be messily devoured. However, since the killer marshmallows are disguised as HPBs, the real HPBs who are fighting the monsters get all the blame. CRAWW AND THE REAL HOT PINK BUNNIES ARE LOYAL AND JUST! Maybe we could call Muse MostAwesymestThangInDaWerld and pie BygKreemiSqishiThangWythAKrusst and babies SweetiPye and books InteryestyngInfoe and people YunyqueThangs and and......and...boy, I'm infected, or should I say Kawntaiminayted  with this...Muse-or MostAwesymedtThangInDaWerld is getting to me...or should I say is getting to Ckylie.... maybe I should take a rest... or take a RealaxyngBrake, and stop thinking about MostAwesymestThangInDaWerld.... Kokopelli, I hereby name you PYESHPLAT (applause)

Mimi, you shall be trusted with the name CANDLEWICKE (applause)

Urania, for your gifted talents, I shall name you MALICIA (astonished gasps, then terrific applause)

Feather, I don't know what you've contributed to (polite laughs) but I smelt you the holy name PAPYRYS (whoops and cheers)

Bo, for your random but interesting facts I hereby call you SOLICYGRAZ ( applause)

Aeiou, just because of your exotic name, I smelt thee AURISTLE (applause)

Crraw, for your seemingly good poetry, I name you SINIPOET (terrific applause and whoops and cheers)

And finally, last but certainly not least (excited gasps) the princess muse of them all, Pwt, I name you VARACRUCIA ( astonished gasps, then smattering applause) !!!!

Thank you, thank you, for attending the 2 minute Official Muse Re-Naming Ceremony! Thank you, and GOOD NIGHT!

For some reason, Pwt says he doesn't want to be a princess. I don't understand it, but I just thought I'd let you know why he stormed out. --Mimi

PWT!?  A PRINCESS!?    You've got to be kidding! Pwt is a man! A MAN I tell you!

(notice the use of interrobangs)

Anyway, my name is Head George and I rule Sugamania, Sugatropolis and all the cities and regions thereof. We don't have any hot pink bunnies in Sugamania (my sister and I created it) but we do have a hot pink catapult, a national peppermint and a meandering turnpike. I am weird (obviously) and proud of it! What fun would life be if you couldn't be weird?

My name is Maggie, which I think is awesome, 1 because it is not a name that you can have seven of in a class, 2 it isn't so unusual that if you say "Hi, my name is Maggie." to someone you just met they will go "Maggie?!?!?" (<-- interrobang!!) and 3 it is hebrew for "Pearl". I love the beach, the ocean, and pearls. The downside is that you can very very (etc.) rarely find ANYTHING, be it keychains, bracelets, necklaces, or whatever with "maggie" on it. I got lucky on a trip to sea world when i was five :D

I don't know anyone with funny initials, but i saw a dentistry office with "Dr. Savage" on it. I don't think i really want to go there. Also, one of the brazilian soccer players in the world cup had the unfortunate last name of "Kaka".

I LOVE my name, but if i absolutely HAD to pick another one, i would pick Thalia. I think that it is greek, but I do not know what for....

Katherine (which means pure) is the name on my birth certificate, but everyone calls me Katie. My middle name is Noble and my last name means good.

Nicknames should be called blankynames! Nicknames are quite often simply a part of a full name (______/blank) and then a y or ie or ey (I'm not saying it's a bad. Besides, blanky is a sort of nickname for blanket given by babies, so it's a (not very clever, but still relevant) play on words.

I agree that worms should be called shroushens.

Earth should be called water! That's what it is, anyway, not earth. (Yes, I know that this has been said and quoted many times by many people, so some of you might consider it cliche. So? I agree with it.)

Thalia, by the way, was the name of the Greek muse of comedy. I don't know what it meant...

Some names I would hate having are Mocha and Aelgifu. I found them on baby naming websites. Ugh. The reason for not wanting to be named Mocha is a bit obvious, I should think, and Aelgifu just sounds horrible as a name. It's female, by the way, though it's hard to tell. It's never used anymore, though, really; it's ancient Anglo-Saxon. It means gift of the elves. I like that, but I still don't like the name.

submitted by Katie, age almost 12
(July 6, 2010 - 12:32 am)

How do you even pronouce aelgifu?!?!?!?

Shroushens sounds much more like worms should be.

Dogs should be called wolfllerrens (or something similar, i'm open to ideas, cause i am not the most adept at naming....)

Earth, if it had to be renamed, should be named Azulat. Or not. I like earth, which is gaelic or something for ground, dirt, etc. (new fact for your page, Bo!)

thanks Katie for telling me what thalia was named after!

I would hate having the names Agnes or Mildred. Mildred sounds too much like mildew. Agnes sound like someone saying "aggy's" with a cold.

I would like to know.... Kokopelli, where did YOU get your name from?? I've never heard it outside of Muse....

On an unrelated subject, does anyone know if 1) there is a "past magazines comics" section on the website, and if there is then 2) how do you get there? If there isnt, then 3) EDs, i am talking to you: Make one!!! Specifically put in the LotR comics, because i like LotR and i missed every issue with those comics!

Thanks for the suggestion, Maggie! --Ed.

Ooh! Ooh! Ooooooh! Pick me! I wanna be Caspian! BTW if you've read The Horse and His Boy, you would know why my name was Cassie. Hint:Corin and Cor. I was hidden so Uncle Miraz wouldn't find me. They thought i was in more danger because apparently, girls are supposed to be weaker than boys. Well, I sure showed them during the battle for Cair Paravel! 150 Telmarines wounded beyond resistance!(I don't kill, I knock them out or take them prisoner, but only if they don't run away first. I only kill when absolutely neccasary, like the Warrior Code.) I was also hidden because I was a magical Half-wolf, from my mother's side, and therefore in danger of being discovered as an Old Narnian. I currently lead a Wolf Pack in the woods near Cair Paravel.
