Q&A with the Muses! (NovemberDecember 2009)

At last, the long-awaited moment has arrived! The Muses have graciously agreed to answer your toughest questions--you know, the really impossible ones, like "Does Feather prefer chocolate or vanilla?" or "Which came first, Urania: the chicken or the egg?" They'll even answer your not-so-tough questions, like

eqnarray16

Go ahead, ask away!

I would be happy to solve that problem, Editors, but there isn't nearly enough space in this little comment box.

Why is ur age withheld? this is in response to urania

Because it's something I'd rather keep to myself! Wait a few hundred years and you'll understand what I mean. --Urania

The answer is the egg, duh, because there were dinosaur eggs before there were even any chickens. (Hey, they didn't specify CHICKEN eggs, did they?:))

submitted by Mango
(January 1, 2010 - 12:16 pm)

No, the answer is the chicken, because, duh, God created all animals, not the animals eggs.

I will now ask all the muses questions,in alphabetical order.

Even though you are my favorite muse, Urania, you are going to be last. Sorry.

Aeiou: I know you were able to talk in 1997, but why can't you talk anymore?

Bo: How do you know everything, even though you're a cow.

Chad: When did you become such a great inventor?

Crraw: I have 2 questions for you:

1. Why are you the only other muse who can understand Aeiou?

2. How do you manage to escape from Pwt every single time?

Feather: Do you know how to plant donut trees?

Kokopelli: What is up with you throwing pies in Urania's face?

Mimi:Is Koko annoying?

Pwt:Why do you hate Crraw so much?

Urania: Don't you hate it when Kokopelli throws pies in you face?

This question if for any of the muses who will answer. If you could have a super power, what would it be?

Mine would be the power to go into books, as any character I wanted, with any power I wanted. I could also go into your magazine and see how things worked when I closed the book! = )

Which, as you may have guessed, is my second favorite book. BOOKS ROCK, PEOPLE! If you haven't, I am now making a suggestion to read those books. Urania, have you read any one of my two favorite books????

My favorite color is the color of our universe! Which is to say: beige. --Urania

What happened on Pi Day? Someone sent in a letter about it. Koko called it the "Best. Holiday. EVER." Chad said Urania still woke up in the middle of the night screaming "NO MORE BANANA CREAM!!!" So -- what exactly did happen?

On Pi Day, they (they being the gifted math class kids) ate pie! And Joseph brought in a book about pi as in the number. I got to eat pie on Tuesday the 16th of March for the Across Five Aprils party at the end. (P.S. My team only lost one of the battles, there was a SURPRISE FIRE DRILL in the middle of it.[It being Red Rover] So we won.) We didn't get to eat first, because we won. So there wasn't any cherry pie left and I had to eat peach! Which one would you pick, Kokopelli- peach or apple??

Urania: Why don't you get all your siblings and plot on a way to get Koko back? I mean, all is fair in love and war, right?  *Hint*Hint*

Are you hinting that it might be love?? --Urania

Feather: How do you grow your plants so well? Do you feed the entire Kokoino County?

I would love to feed everyone, but sadly, some Muses just don't appreciate vegetables! Can you believe Mimi is the only one who would taste my Brussels sprout stew?  --Feather

Bo: You might want to consider running away from Kokoino County. I mean, sooner or later they'll run out of meat, am I correct?

WHAT are you implying???? --Bo

Pwt: Since Kokopelli made satellite-guided pies, why not ask him to make a satellite-guided net?

Trust me, you don't want to owe Kokopelli a favor. --Pwt

Chad: What are you really good at with hardware appliances?? Do you have ANY musical talent at all??? I play flute, and I am in a flute group with five other people, and we are playing songs in our recital together.

Well, I can build a pipe organ out of pipe cleaners. Does that count as a musical talent? --Chad

Mimi: I can really get along with people, too! *Thinks* Except when they annoy me so much I jsut want to disappear. THEN you'd better watch out.

Yes, the hardest time to get along with people is when they don't want to get along with you! Or when they hit you with pies...Not to name any names. --Mimi

Feather, if you want everyone to love your veggies, make BROCCOLI CASSEROLE. It is the only way I will eat broccoli.

If you're plotting a rebellion against Koko than you should throw Banana and Tar pies at him.

Do any of the Muses play the saxophone?

Another one that a friend (AvalonGirl) and I thought up:

How many dimensions is Kokopelli? Technically, silhouettes are 2D, but then they're not supposed to be able to throw pies either. And in one article, a single line is shown, with the Muses saying: "What is it? A chopstick?" "No, it's Kokopelli from the side." Which adds support to the 2D hypothesis. Which one is it? Tell me? Please?

And I know you're not going to tell me this, but is Pwt a boy or a girl? I think he/she is a boy. (Why did I just type he/she? It completely defeats the purpose of using pronouns, since it is longer than the actual name Pwt!!!!!)

I'm sure I will think of more later...

I'd like to think I have many dimensions. --Koko

Bo, do you and Urania ever hang out to stare at the sky together?

Of course! Staring into space is, after all, my specialty. --Bo

Feather, what is your favorite flavor of donut?

Coconut! Wait, unless you're including filled donuts, because that would have to be Boston cream. Do sprinkles count as a flavor? Oh, I almost forgot about glazed! How could I forget glazed! Then there's... --Feather

It's not nice to torture Feather with such hard questions! --Mimi

Dear Crraw,

In the Kokopelli and company, i have noticed that it is a desert there. So where do you build your nest?

Your number 1 fan and always with my head in the clouds,

Yoshi

P.S. You will notice that i have put this into letter format. this is because if i post here you (hopefully) cannot send message board posts into the FMP.

P.P.S. What actually happens to a letter thrown in the FMP?

Rocky cliffs are perfectly good for building nests. The tops of cactuses are OK, too, as long as you watch out for needles. And if I run out of cozy places to roost, there's always the FMP! --Crraw

I was wondering...

How did Urania get picked to be in the New Muses? I know Larry Gonick has claimed that "I couldn't pronounce Terpsichore," but

a) You don't have to pronounce it, just spell it in Koko&Co.;

b) Clio isn't that hard to pronounce (Muse of History);

c) It's pronounced Terp-si-kor. Not that hard.

Tell me! Please!

Are you implying I SHOULDN'T be here?? Who wouldn't pick me? Just because Clio is the easiest to pronounce doesn't mean she's any fun. --Urania

I think I remember one of the muses saying in an issue from the Precambrian (ok, somewhere in '04-'06) that Pwt was pronounced "the way a marble sounds when dropped in the toilet". Quite tasteful, Muse.

PWT, I REFUSE TO ACCEPT THAT YOU ARE NOT A GIRL. When did this happen? Did someone else (Koko?) take control of the editors' office and force them to write lies? I was SHOCKED to see Pwt referred to as 'he' in the last issue of Kokopelli and Company (not this one, the last one). There must be an explanation for this, I thought frantically to myself. And indeed there was. Larry Gonick's signature was missing from the comic! I am therefore forced to conclude that SOMEONE ELSE took control of Muse for the month and that Pwt is a FEMALE. I mean, Pwt, you've always acted so girl-ish! One time (back in the Precambrian again) I wrote a letter to Muse (I never got around to sending it) with an extensively-researched chart with ample evidence proving that PWT IS A GIRL. I'm sorry, Muses. This battle is back on. :-D

Larry Gonick created the October comic strip, just like all the rest. Sorry to spoil your conspiracy theory. --Ed.

So, how come none of my questions are showing up? like you know the other posts...

1. Koko, would you change you name if you had the chance? (not sayig that you should)

What's wrong with my name? I like it just fine! Of course, Miranda would be a nice name, too... --Koko

2. Urania, do you miss the other Muses?

We have family reunions from time to time, and some of us write letters. Calliope is an exhausting penpal, though--they don't call her the muse of EPIC poetry for nothing! --Urania

3. What's the best kind of pie?

I have far too many favorites to pick just one. --Koko

I have two questions for Kokopelli. One: I cannot believe that your image comes from Pan, my favorite Greek god. Yes, I know, the word "panic" derives from his name, but I really don't think he went around throwing pies in people's faces. Plus he actually appreciates the Muses' music/ art/ stories. And you clearly don't. And he's the god of nature, so he would like to learn about the universe, so he would be nicer to Urania. So what's up with your total lack of similarity with him?? Sheesh.... And, two: You are the Muse of TUNES and tricks. TUNES. And music, no matter how bad, follows a mathematical pattern. Thus: your music comes from math, without math there would be no music, and be nicer to Urania for it.

Um...wait, what was the question again? --Koko

Yeah! Let's see some cooperation! (Not to mention that there is a mathematical science of throwing [e.g. pies]...)

submitted by CoolCat
(January 1, 2010 - 3:07 pm)

CoolCat: Yes, something about leverage and energy transfer. Even more evidence that math and Kokopelli are intertwined! So HA, Mr. Math-Is-Useless! And, Aeiou; I think you can speak, but you choose not to. And I understand completely! I think arm-talking and typing are much more fun than just talking all day. (That's why I'm so much more talkative here than "real" life. I just can't help myself!) I would like both Aeiou and Koko to respond to this post, so I can hear from both my favorite and least favorite Muses. Yes, the first and last parts of that last sentence match up. Aeiou=favorite and Kokopelli=least favorite. Just to clear up any confusion. Again: please reply, both of you!

Um...I'm the only Muse here right now. Hope that's OK. Does anyone want to compare crow-catching strategies? --Pwt

submitted by Mango
(January 1, 2010 - 6:34 pm)

Sigh.... those were, for your simple mind, a list of facts proving that you should be nicer to Urania and all the other Muses. And that your personality makes no sense because the person you are based on is completely different. And that math and music are so intertwined that I have no idea how the idea got into your head that math is silly. And Urania, if she's read this, will know what I'm talking about. So ask her. Politely. Or else.

Can you make a really, really big net covered in glue for Kokopelli? And I have a plan for you to catch Craaw. See, you wait for him to land, like the last time you actually caught him, and then you smack your net down on top of him, only your net has a built in pie that hits him in the face so he can't escape. It's brilliant!

Let's keep this Q&A thread going, OK? It's really fun, so people, keep checking it even though it's in the Nov/Dec section.

My question: What is the deal with Chad's and Aeiou's twins that I read about on Wikipedia? Which issue were they in? I mean, seriously, Bcdfghjklmnpqrstvwxyz? Why have I never heard of them? Which question is going to be answered? :-)

Gosh, we don't know what issue that appeared in, either. Can any Musers out there help? --Ed.

submitted by CoolCat
(January 5, 2010 - 7:20 pm)

I don't believe that there is a Bcdfghjklmnpqrstvwxyz. I mean, he/she would have to also be a Muse, and the editors said somewhere in the past that there were no Muses who didn't make the cut. Thus, he/she is not in existence. And, Aeiou: TAHRAKNBKLS FWOTR TYHNE RJELPCLDY!

submitted by Mango
(January 6, 2010 - 4:23 pm)

Why would he/she have to be a Muse? The New Muses were whoever signed up. Urania's sisters ("Calliope and them") didn't sign up, so they aren't New Muses; they are Old Muses, but that doesn't have anything to do with Bcdf...; if he/she didn't sign up, he/she wouldn't be a Muse.

"She, like Chad, has an identical twin named Bcdtghjklmnpqrs." ~from the Wikipedia article on Koko&Co, in the Aeiou section. Apparently we got the name wrong. (I can see why.) Chad's twin is named Frad.

Eds/Muses? Does siblingness of a Muse require one to be a Muse?

Chad's brother is Frad, his "long lost twin"! He appeared in the January 2005 issue, the one on forensics. What happened was someone stole Feather's doughnuts and the DNA evidence pointed to Chad, who maintained that he hadn't stolen them. Then, lo and behold, Frad showed up! He had drooled on the doughnuts, hence his DNA (identical to Chad's, since they're twins) was on the doughnuts. I can't remember any mention of BCDFGHJKLMNPQRSTVWXYZ. :-)

My dad used to sing an alphabet song that went:

Ab-k'def-gee-jeckle-m'nop'kwer-stoov-wicksiz

(AB CDEF GHI JKL MNOPQR STUV WXYZ)

Forgive me for this silliness. The gee part of the song is pronounced not like the LETTER g (jee) but like a hard g ('g' in 'gang').

So that is my interpretation of the alphabet's pronunciation. It is a swirl of Aeiou's name and her twin's name, which I don't feel like typing out. Cheers!

I believe that song originated on Sesame Street, when Big Bird thought the alphabet was just one big long word. --Ed.

There was an old contest to design your own Muse, and one of them might have been BCDFGHJKLMNPQRSTVWXYZ, Aeiou's twin sister.  If I were at home I might be able to dig up the issue, but I could very easily be wrong, and she might have just appeared in the margins or a letter Frad-style.

I mean, 8 Urania doubles would seem rather terrifying to me if I was Koko. But he might get along well with Euterpe, Terpsichore, and Thalia, the old muses of music, dance, and comedy respectively. Who knows, Thalia might be the black sheep of the family and think it hilarious to team up with Koko in pie-throwing. Do Urania or Koko have any thoughts on this?

So someone, anyone, explain!

submitted by Silver, age 13, ON
(April 25, 2010 - 7:09 pm)

Silver, Hot Pink Bunnies (HPBs) started when readers would write long letters arguing about which is better, cats or dogs. They are little bunny emoticons, obviously colored hot pink. Since the editors were getting tired of the cat-dog controversy, they started replacing any passage treating that topic in a published letter with an adorable little bunny. (Un)fortunately, readers fell in love with the HPBs, and they became an integral part of any FMP threat. (The FMP, or Fan Mail Pit, is where the editors throw fan mail they don't publish, and readers include elaborate, often silly threats in their letters to encourage the editors not to throw their letters in there, but instead to publish them.) I believe there are actually two species of HPB, the nice ones and the fierce ones. As far as I know, the HPBs subsist exclusively on HPCs (Hot Pink Carrots) and pies. They are much-loved by the Muser community.

By the way, welcome! We're glad to have you, and I TOTALLY understand the feeling of being a newbie. I'm only a few months past from being one myself.

Hope this helps,

THANK YOU EDS for creating a muse Q and A page!!!! Also, thank you to whoever answered the question about HPBs. I only started reading MUSE a year ago, then had to sadly cancel my subscription for a while cause I moved.... but i will soon be getting a new one!

I have a question for AEIOU, one of my favorite muses - CAN you talk? I understand if you can and choose not to, as i do that my self most of the time (i am not a loud person) Can you talk at all, or do you just not want to?

Urania, another of my favorite muses, i am at a loss to explain why you like math so much! Math is hard. Math takes up time one could spend reading the new muse issue, or in your case chasing Kokopelli for hitting you in the face with a pie. Why do you like it???

Kokopelli, out of all the muses, why is it that Urania gets the most pies in the face??? I was at a party that Student Council set up for the school auction, and there was a pie in the face stand (long story) and all the student council members had to be hit in the face with cream pie! It was not fun when you are on the other end of it, but i am probably more sympathetic to your pie throwing hobby.

Donan S. is a boy who once lived in Kansas, but went the way of his etters and got stuck in the you-know-where. There have been many rescue attempts to save him in the works, and eventually one will happen. The editors are completely oblivious, even  thinking his wailing is the Chicago wind. So if the authorities(and his mourning family) stumble upon Muse HQ, then they will shut down Muse and everyone will be forced to read Cricket instead. That's why a rescue is so important.

Hmmm... He might be evil.... though i don't think bad poetry is strictly "evil".... unless you're a Vogon (yes i did read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and it rocked) Maybe every time Crraw leads Pwt somewhere while Pwt is chasing him, he is taking him to the vogon ship! GASP! And the HPBs are waiting to catch Pwt in his own net!

Or he could just be bored and talking to the HPBs cause there's nothing better to do. Personally, i would like to think that the muses AREN'T evil, but it is fun to speculate...

I have a question for Aeiou and Crraw... If Aeiou can't speak, then how do Crraw and everyone else know what she's saying? Is there like a special sleeve language, or does Aeiou mouth the words, or does she type ones and zeros into a computer and the computer translates it into words that pop up on screen, and they read those, or what? (If chad ever gets bored, there's a new invention he could make... "Aeiou Translator!")

And also, will we ever see Urania's sisters in a MUSE Magazine? I think it would be really cool if they all teamed up and got to Kokopelli FIRST for a change....

Can you please explain what HPB's are? Feather deserves more respect. I mean, he loves to eat donuts and doesn't that just automatically elevate him to some status of cool?! OK, and here is my Q's:

Mimi: I am sad for you. You are my favorite Muse and no-one asked you a question! Here's the first: why are you so awesomely cool?!

Feather: Jelly doughnuts are the BEST! You go bird! But are you a boy?

Urania: You don't happen to help with homework, do you?

I think Feather might like chocolate because, after all, chocolate came from cocoa beans.  Get it?  COCOA BEANS!  HAAHAAHAA!!!!!!

Hot Pink Bunnies are imaginary creatures that most Muse readers pretend to have, and threaten the editors with in their letters/etters/e-mails. I have been getting Muse since November/December 2008, and the HPB's are appearing less and less in letter/etters/e-mails. That's probaly because a) The editors are getting sick of it and not publishing letters/etters/e-mails with that threat, and b) readers are thinking of more creative things to threat with.

In response to both of you (because it's so likely that either of you are going to ever come back and read this), the HPBs first appeared as an attempt to end the Great Cat/Dog Wars.  I forget exactly when the Great Cat/Dog Wars took place, or when the explanatory "Surfeit of Coneys" article was published, but long story short, the arguments between the Cat Lovers and the Dog Lovers were getting a little intense in the mail section, so the editors decided to end the war by a) having an entire issue devoted to cats and then dogs, and b) replacing all mentions of dogs or cats in future letters with little hot pink bunnies.  The rest, as they say, is history.
