Power to the Short! (And Tall! And Medium!) (November/December 2010)

You heard some of the negative press that short people have been getting in this month's article, "Are Short People Doomed?" But Pwt, a proud Short Muse, wants to hear some of your success stories. What's awesome about being short? Do you fit in the best hiding places? Can you ride miniature ponies? Tall people, we haven't forgotten about you: what's great about being tall? And how is the weather up there?

I am absolutely midgety. It stinks because everyone thinks I'm younger then I actually am.

Q and A with a Tall Person:Top 5 things people say to me because I'm tall (and what I say back)

1.)Them: Do you play basketball?

Me:No, just because I'm tall doesn't mean I'm athletic. Sheesh!

2.) Them: What is it like looking down on people all the time?

Me: You don't realize it. I'm so used to looking down at people that I don't notice it.

3.) When you say your head is in the clouds, is it becase you're so tall?

Me: No, it's because I'm spacing out and not listening to anything you're saying.

4) So is there like a tall peoples' association or something?

No, most of my friends are shorter than me.

5) You're really tall.

Yeah, I don't think I need someone to tell me that I'm tall. I look in a mirror, you know.

Then why is your hair such a mess?

I'm pretty much average height, but I have a friend, pretend her name is Janna, who says that she LOVES being short.

TWO OF JANNA'S REASONS WHY SHORT IS AWESOME

It's easier to duck under things - you never hit your head!

You can pass for a little kid and get all the cool stuff that big kids don't, like another lollipop. ;)

First of all, we prefer vertically challenged and secondly, Cam is vertically challenged so you better watch who you call short. Some of the world's best people are small. Examples: Me, Me, Me, and Me. You can get into Disney for low price for a lot longer if you aren't tall. Erin is jealous of this fact. You know those games at the fair where every child wins a prize? Well, I highly doubt our friend Caroline could win a prize every time. No offense. Plus, with those age guessing games, you can trick the people who run them.

I have a friend who is short who is of one the smartest and most social people I know, and another friend who is very tall and a very likeable person... I really don't think height matters very often. I definitely don't think of people any different depending on their height.

How'd you get the red letters? I totally agree with you. With the height thing. (Also, people say that blondes are supposedly not very smart. I think it is not very smart to think that. (No offense, people.) I know some very intellegent people with blonde hair. THE HAIR ON YOU HEAD DOES NOT SAY WHAT'S INSIDE YOUR HEAD.)

(I know those parentheses were kinda off subject, but I had to say it somewhere. This just seemed like the place to say it.)

I am moderately tall, and I enjoy it.  I like being thought of as older than I am.  However, I have a couple of more petite friends.  One is at my dance, and she is at my level.  Some people group her with her younger sister's level simply because she looks younger.  She can do anything I can!  My other friend just doesn't like being short.

That stinks, being put in a class with way younger kids. I was grouped with 7-year-olds for gymnastics one time, and it was really embarrasing, especially because I'm so tall. I was almost as tall as the instructor. (Only in my case, we were grouped by skill level.)

(December 2, 2010 - 4:32 pm)

I, as a tall person, think that despite the statistics, short people have it better. They get the advantages of little kids: lollipops, getting in for less, and they have it way easier in things like marching band. If you're short you have tall people all around you shielding you from the weather. If you're tall, you get the weather, it's awkward climbing in tunnels, you usually have bigger feet (when I was younger I was upset that light-up sneakers didn't fit me), and people assume that you do a sport of some kind. My aunt always asks me how dance is going, and I always have to remind her that I quit eight years ago. My uncle thinks that I do basketball.

My friend was an unaccompanied minor on a plane once, and she was with a six-year old. The six-year-old looked up at her and said, "You're tall." I am a lot taller than her. If you think about it, height is all a matter of perspective.

Ah, finally. The midgets get recognized. Having been a midget myself for all of my 12 years, 9 months, 2 days, and almost 23 hours, I am an expert in being short.

The best thing about it is probably the fact that you can still fit in all those awesome kiddy things, like the playplace at the Chick-fil-a's and Mcdonalds's, even when you're probably way too old. Also, when you have to fit in someplace small, like a tunnel you have to crawl through because your little sister wants to show you her "secret passage" to the other side of the porch, it's not a much of a hassle to get through. And you don't have that annoying phase when you're growing up when none of the clothes in the kids part of the store fit you, but you're too small for the teen sizes. You kinda fit in both... YAY!

The worst part is that people can NEVER GUESS YOUR AGE PROPERLY! You always end up in the group with the eight to ten year olds, or get the little kid prize, or whatever. It's so annoying when you're talking to an adult, and they say "Wow, you're pretty smart for a ten year old" and you're like, "What!? Hello? I am clearly TWELVE, almost THIRTEEN, thank you VERY much, " but you can't say that because it would be rude. *sigh* And don't get me started about having to reach stuff that's on the top shelf...

However, all in all, I think I like being short. At least you can wear heels or whatever without towering over EVERYONE, and you can hide pretty well in hide-and-seek when you play with your younger cousins or when you're babysitting...

I am tall, though looking at my class altogether you wouldn't know it. I am in 7th grade and about 5' 2"ish. Most of the boys are taller than me, (but only two of the girls...) BUT I skipped a grade, so if I was where I'm supposed to be, I'd tower over everyone. Being tall rocks because you can alway reach whereever someone hid the chocolate up high... tee hee hee.

However, one of my bestfriends is quite short and is, I  believe, quite happy as such. She makes up for her height with her strong will and personality; she is stubborn, fun, and extremely agrivating, all of which are reasons she's my friend (along with the fact that I'm friends with all the girls in my grade) (only 16 people in the 7th grade! compared to the 300 7th graders at the local public middle school, tee hee, when I tell my public school friends they find it so hard to believe!)

Thats my opinion, anyway.

Fact: Short people are more compassionate, because they have a bigger heart to body ratio.

submitted by liz m. , age 5 (my sister is typing this for me., november, 1980
(December 6, 2010 - 6:07 pm)

I never knew that! But does that make them more compassionate? Because if you've read that one article a long time ago, tho one about organ transplants with the cadaver, the one with the argument about the seat of the soul? Because even if the heart is the seat of the soul, would the size of the heart matter?  Seeing as the soul isn't something you can set a size to? And if the heart is proportionally bigger, then wouldn't a short person be just as compassionateas a tall person with the same size heart? Even if the size of the heart did matter, that would only make short people be proportionally more compassionate, wouldn't it? So they would be just as compassionate as tall people? Wouldn't the height not matter? What if they're short with a big heart and no compassion at all? (Assuming that the heart is the seat of the soul and the source of all emotions). I mean, if the heart is the seat of the soul, then having, say, a heart attack or heart disease (hopefully not though) doesn't make you a bad person.

Nice thinking, though-- I never thought of that!!!!

I am totally short. I am in 6th grade and most 2nd graders are about as tall as I am. One example being my little sister. It is sooooo embarassing when people come up to us and say: "Whoa! Are you guys twins?!" Then I have to say: "No I am about 3 years older than her." And when waitresses come up to me and say: "We don't have soup on the kids menu." So I have to say: "I AM NOT ORDERING OFF OF THE KIDS MENU!!!!" Grr.

But I like being short also. It is pretty cool. Everone wants to be friends with the short kids. Not kidding. EVERYONE.

I have two friends. Let's call them by the code names Firebird and Nickel.

Well, anyhow, Firebird is one of the most popular kids in the school, and he's about as tall as my sister, who's in 4th grade. Nickel is one of the smartest, he's very good at sports, is also very popular, and is friends with one of the tallest kids.

I'm not very tall myself and my sister teases me for it all the time. :( However, I'm in 7th grade, yet taking Spanish I and Honors Geometry at the high school, three normal classes at the middle school (Accelerated English, Science, Social Studies) and Chinese, high school Grammar and Algebra II at home. Not to mention that I finished Biology I. Who said that short people weren't smart? I'd like to whack them upside the head.

THE NUMBER 1 BESTEST THING ABOUT BEING SHORT:

Everyone (thats a girl) wants to carry me around!!! My friend Morgan started it and now:

Destiny, Cassidy, Jasmine, others that I can't think of

Are all carrying me everywhere!!! But no, the stupid vice principal would NOT have people carrying me. "PUT THE LITTLE GIRL DOWN!!!" he yells. "She's not little." my friend points out. I'm 5'2.5'' and 12 years old. I'm averagishly tallish, I guess. I'm not quite tall enough to reach stuff high up, but I can climb on counters, jump, etc. to get what I need. It's actually more fun than just reaching up and getting it.

MAN I WISH IT SNOWED MORE AROUND HERE!!! Sorry. Just had to say that. Early this year, we got enough snow that they closed the schools and we got to sled down this huge hill by our house! Almost all the kids in the neighborhood were out. You just had to make sure you didn't end up in the lake. Kinda off topic, but that's okay.

I am approximately as tall as the two other sixth graders in my class, and all the little first graders look up to us because we're older and taller.  Since I am 5 feet tall, I can touch the ceiling in parts of the hall if I jump high enough.  The little kids find this greatly amusing.

Snowlover, I can also climb on counters!  I like to sit on the sink when I brush my teeth and my hair. : )
