Monster Mash (October 2009)

This month, we heard from some classic movie monsters: The Phantom of the Opera, Frankenstein's monster, Dracula, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. But as scary as they might have seemed in their prime, they look a little goofy today. What do you think is the scariest monster around? Or your favorite monster? (We're partial to Grover, ourselves.) Or do you hate Halloween and all that scary stuff?

One of the coolest monsters has to be a Greek monster like harpies. Did Urania think Zeus was cool? Was she friends with Athena? Urania was mentioned in Percy Jackson and the Olympians! Well not out right but it still counts! Urania it make me super super super super happy if you RESPOND!

Who is this Percy Jackson? Is he a friend of Athena's? She never tells me anything. --Urania

My sister loves the Percy Jackson series! In the movie Coraline, the other mother is sssoooooo scary. Now I won't go into any closets just in case I get transported to another world.

I love the movie Coraline. At my 9th birthday party, my friends and I (is my friends and I correct?) [Yes! --Ed.] went to see it in 3-D!!!!!!! Urania, if you respond, I will be as happy as the day I went to the public library and found out that my favorite book, The Little Prince, is a movie!!!! :D

3D movies are OK, but I prefer stargazing! --Urania

No, Percy isn't quite a friend of Athena. Annabeth is! Percy and Annabeth are friends. Annabeth also happens to be my imaginary half-sister. (If only I was a demigod! ah well)

I love that series!!!!!

Athena hates Percy, Urania. She doesn't want him hanging aroung with her daughter, Annabeth.

Dear Urania,

Percy Jackson is a fictional main character, a son of Poseidon, the sea god in the series of Percy Jackson and the Olympians.  I wouldn't say that he's a friend of Athena, more like just an acquaintance.  I would say that Medusa is the archenemy, plus Luke.

Oh, my gosh!!! I love the Phantom of the Opera! My mom hates it though, says it's too dark. Well, it kinda is. I also like the hydra.

My favorite monster has to be  The Blob! The blob. It sleeps and creeps... I hardly know that song.

But you have to admit, even though it isn't a monster, the vengeful spirit of the cat from the Chinese Zodiac legend is kinda creepy... Iguess.. But to any Fruits Basket fans out there... GO KISA SOHMA!!!!!!!!! AND YUUUKIIII!!!! AND KYOOOOOOOOO AND TOHRUUUUUUUUUU!!!!! Sorry.. I'm getting sidetracked....

P.S. Can you PLEASE PLEASE MAKE AN ARTICLE ABOUT JAPAN AND ITS CUSTOMS???? MY BEST FRIEND IS JAPANESE, AND SHE HARDLY SPEAKS ENGLISH!

Yays! PotO! I love Phantom of the Opera. I have a neighbor named Hannah, and we made a bunch of easter eggs, then we named them after Greek gods and godesses, and then we filmed our own version of PotO.Yes, I know, we're crazy. The phantom (who was played by Dionysus because one side got smashed) lived in a Chuck E. Cheese lunchbox. most of this happened on a treadmill. Christine (played by Aphrodite) had a pink pipe cleaner dress. it was AWESOME!

You're not crazy! That rocks! Did you do it based on the script? If so, where'd you get it?

P.S. I own a replica of the PotO mask. I was the Phantom for Halloween last year, and my sister was Meg.

P.P.S. We are both girls.

Hey, Amy C, I totally agree with you and your mom about Phantom of the Opera. It creeps me out but it is so awesome. How do you talk to your friend if she can barely speak English? Do you write back and forth? Do you know any Japanese so you can talk to her? Or is it mind-reading? (NO offense meant if this makes you feel mad.) Write back please!

I can't believe I finally got my letter published!! And the Muses talked about it! Not just the way they normally do, but actually in person!! I am so happy!!!! And also another Sidney got THEIR letter published in the exact same article!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now that I've got that out of my system, I feel it is necessary to explain who I am. I am Sidney, the Muse of the Stars, also known as Mango, and I am moving to Kokonino Kounty as soon as possible. Aeiou and Urania are going to be my best friends- I hope. I like Halloween, but it isn't my favorite holiday- that would have to be Thanksgiving, seeing as I get to visit my family and friends on Planet Astrexia. Also, it's the closest holiday to my birthday. My favorite monster- well, it's really a mythical creature- is the phoenix. I love anything that flies, actually.

Congratulatory pies! I saw your postcard -- it was AWESOME. Did Koko really send you a postcard? What did it say? And what was that about Bo eating pens?

Yipppeeee! I'm very excited for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (24 exclamation points)

~CoolCat

P.S. Good luck with moving to Mars! Wait a minute... where are you moving???

P.P.S. to the eds: What is the adjective form of Muse? Is it: Musy? Musey? Musish? Museish? Museical? I'm getting a little farfetched here... :)

Those all sound good! We'd also accept Muserly and possibly Muse-tastic. --Ed.

Yes, Koko sent me a postcard. In it, he said he'd write me a long personal letter, but Bo ate his pen. I said he still has computers. He could TYPE me a long personal letter:) And yes, I am moving to Mars. I'm currently on Planet Astrexia. I wanted to be somewhere in the Milky Way galaxy, so I thought I'd move as close to the other Muses as I could without actually moving to Earth. (I hear the humans are spoiling their planet.) Koko also said in his postcard that he hopes Urania can see me with her telescope. I didn't check this in my postcard for fear of being rude, but I want to tell Kokopelli that I hope Urania can see him with her telescope.

(and hopefully a rainbow will show up, bringing iris and posieon to meet me!!!!!!) :0

you're forgetting ATHENA! my mommy! if I was a demigod, that is. I know a daughter of Hermes, and it's weird, but a daughter of Athena and a daughter of Hermes can be best friends *speaking from experience*. Hannah (the daughter of Hermes) absolutely ADORES rover, and writes the letter G all over herself. she' a bit obsessed.

My house is haunted. The ghost hides our stuff and leaves clues as to where the stuff is. They're hard. Not because the notes are cryptic or anything, but because the ghost's handwriting is seriously messy...

I CAN'T TELL YOU! YOU HAVE TO READ THEM FOR YOURSELF! Of course, I could spoil it for anyone who made the Lightning Thief movie. I am writing them a very long angry letter.

I like the Hydra. I had to make one once for a project. There was a chair attached under it so you could get in it and make it move around. It looked like a green lump with noodles (the type you float around on in a swimming pool) sticking out of it.

Werewolves, I think, are my favorite monsters. Unless Jellicle Cats/Werecats (from CATS) count. Or unless Loki counts... he was half-demon after all... Has anyone ever read Runemarks? Because it is AWESOME!!! Anyway, werewolves are cool. Even the New Moon ones, and I'm not a big fan of the Twilight series. It's okay, but not the best book I've ever read. Also, people in the Medieval Ages used to fear vampires. People used to be killed on account of being vampires. And now the feared bloodsuckers have been to reduced to glittery humans... (No offense to anyone who does like Twilight. It's just not my type of thing.) And to anyone who's read Runemarks, Loki and Maddy are my favorite characters. To anyone who's seen CATS, my favorite characters are Coricopat, Tantomile, Mistoffellees, and Jemima. (C&T are the psychic ones who predict Old D's arrival, Jemima's the one that sings Memory with Griz, and Misto is the sparkly one with the song about him.)

Muse rocks, along with Corico, Loki, and WEREWOLVES!!! (yes, I can be slightly obsessive sometimes.)

The scariest monster is MR. FUN GIRAFFE CLOWN!! He is a creation of my own. He has a creepy beanie on top of his head. His head is of a smirking, conniving man who (as my friend says) looks like he is trying to make someone give him money. He has a clown nose and the body of a giraffe.

 That DOES sound scary. --Ed.

I have to totally agree with you on the werewolves thing because I, myself, a HUGE cat fanatic.  I have a cat at home.  I kinda like Twilight series, but it's not exactly in my most favorite category. Sorry, Twilight fans.

The Phantom of the Opera is NOT a monster! HE is a person! An incredibly tender one at that! Oh, and The Phantom of the Opera is a book by Gaston Leroux, and the longest-running Broadway show! The movie is based on the play, which is based on the book. See? And who would say that the Jellicle Cats from Cats are a) Werecats or b) MONSTERS?! (shudder). Okay, if you insist that they're monsters.... then they're my favorite. Okay? But again, THEY ARE NOT MONSTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.....

P.S. My lifelong goal is to be on the Broadway stage, or at least to know Broadway and its history front to back.
