iMSCARED (July/August 2011)

Intelligent machines have been the subject of a million cheesy movies, creepy novels, and unbearably long poems by Crraw. It's easy to think that powerful (and angry!) machines are the stuff of legend, until we read something like "The Jeopardy Machine," and start to wonder...

What do you think? Could computers and robots be a real threat to humanity someday? Does the thought of a super-intelligent computer like Watson make you crazily excited, or a little anxious?

I think that technology is getting out of hand. People are now becoming addicted to it. I belive that if humans continue to make computers like Watson, then one day computers could be a real threat to humans. The idea of a super smart computer doesn't make me anxious, but annoyed, because technology is going overboard.

I totally agree with you Reegen. There are some things that computers will never be able to do like humans! They will never be able to truly feel, like we can. They won't ever be able to truly understand. They will just search in the recess of its database and place and pull information related to the subject. They can't comprehend, and they never will be able to. It is only the miracle that we call a brain that can do that.

i dont think that machines are capable of malice yet. however, i heard of a machine that can exude and odor somewhat like sweat if it is working hard. "dude, check out my toned microprocessor" "you think thats good, peep these CDs! they ain't no floppy discs!"

I believe that technology is fine, we just need to make sure the purposes we use it for are worthwhile and good. Like making robots designed to be smarter than and highly more destructive than humans is just asking for trouble, but making computers like Blue J, a.k.a Watson is an interesting experiment.

Well, the idea that humans can program computers like Watson is cool. it definitly intrests me. But the idea of robots taking over the world? No. Just...no. People would have to program the robots to be able to do that. Robots can't learn on there own, so unless the were programed to take over the world, they couldn't do it.

Well, thinking about it now, there are some robots that have been programed to "learn", but only about little things. Nobody would ever create a robot designed to take over the world.

The idea of a machine taking over the world is almost impossible for me to believe, but when I think about the idea that a machine can be taught to play Jeopardy like a human, I wonder what else machines can be taught to do like humans. (Like want freedom) Maybe one day machines will take over the earth, I just hope I won't be there to deal with it.

Totally agree! Humans in general always want more, need more, like programming robots to think for themselves. Now, I tell what's scary: a robot that can learn by itself. Like learning that taking over the world would totally give them ultimate power. Like learning that robots could possibly beat humans. Yikes! I'd rather stick to iPods and computers, thank you very much.

I think robots will be a problem in the future because they will take all the jobs that would normally go to humans. Unenployment would go up people would begin to see robots as enemies which would be the begining of the robot wars. The distant future, the year 2000. The humans are dead. We used poisonous gasses, and poisoned thier....       You know, right? Flight Of The Conchords?

I don't think we're really worrying about evil machines. We're worrying about what happens when WE are smart enough to find a way to give machines conscious minds on a par to humans. Minds that process emotion and can reason like a human. Wouldn't that be hard morally - programming a thinking being to become your slave?!

Anyone ever read The Homework Machine? This superintelligent computer figures out a way to keep running without a power source by searching on the internet. If a machine can do that, easily it could develop a conscious mind.

Has anyone every read the book "The Ear the Eye and the Arm"? it's a book set in the 2300's in africa and there are robot butlers and maids, robot dogs and a whole bunch of crazy stuff!

I agree about the whole technology thing. I read an article in TIME magazine once (please excuse my disloyalty muse) that said in as little as 40 years technology could take over man kind.I think it definitley could. Just look at how rapidly technology has advanced in the past ten years. That is a pretty scary thought.

Oviously what I'm trying to say is that I don't think technology should advance  anymore!!!

P.S. doesn't that thing at the bottom of the page that tells me to type the letters know that i'm not a robot!!!!

Machines will not take us over until we create a self improving robot. While the argument can be made that computers are only as smart as the humans that made them, a self-improving robot will kill that argument. If a robot is self improving, it will fix any flaw it's creator may have accidently made. Without malice- because computers just don't feel things- they could decimate our population, simply because a self improving robot will, logically, become smarter than it's creator and realize that humans could stand improvement. It can improve itself, why not "improve" us?

just saying.

I think that making computers like Watson would be good if put to jobs more noble than playing Jeapardy .  I think super-intelligent robots could help elderly people when they're shopping, cooking, or doing any stressful activity.  Of course robots could not be a threat to humanity!  That's just in sci-fi and horror.  Technology is good if you put it to a good use.  Instead of trying to stop the digital age, we should make practical apps and robots to educate us and help us with our daily lives.  For example, I think that there should be an app to help you sell stuff like Girl Scout cookies or Boy Scout popcorn.  That would be a practical app because it would keep track of things and make calculations. Therefore, as long as we use it wisely, technology is good!

We read this story in reading class called True Love by Isaac Asmiov, and the main character, Milton, was using his computer program, Joe to find his true love. But then Joe becomes so like Milton and he wants the perfect woman that they find for himself. Science fiction is essential to our survival because it shows us different paths that our future can lead, and we can try to erase the possibility of negative ones with science fiction.

I think that computers only do what we program them to do, and there is a difference between thinking and learning. If we program then to think, they will eventually come to the conclusion that it is probably the best thing to take over. But if we program them to learn, then they will remember what we have told thm and use it when they need it. We need to proram them to learn, not to think.

Has anyone here read the Pendragon Series? If you have, (I am NOT going to spoil it!) do you remember the DADOs? St. Dane started to use them to try take over the different worlds, so they can be evil, if in the hands of the wrong person.

Although the first law of robotics does state that a robot can not harm a human, if a powerful enough robot was put in the hands of the wrong person, that person could wreck havoc on the world. As long as scientists make sure that thier robots don't go to the wrong person and/or make sure that they themselves don't go down that math of Tom Marvolo Riddle (AKA Lord Voldmort), I don't see why scientists should stop having fun. Robots may, however, cause unemployment for humans, therefore causing the economy to plummet, so more jobs will neeed to be created.

A warning to all scientists or will-be scientists: If your robot starts reporting dreams of any kind, starts to believe that is it human, does anything that it is not programed to, starts to hang out around your programming equipment, or does anything that violates one of the Rules of Robotics in any way, shape, or form, shut it down immediately and call your local robotic help center for more information. If your robot will not shut down or turns itself back on after it is shut down, make sure it is off Wi-Fi, copy all of its programming, and try again. If this or other suggestions from your local robotic help center do not work, check againto make sure that you have all of your robot's programming recorded and take out the power. If that does not work, if there are no other options that have even an inkling of working, short circut your robot. If your robot cannotbe short-circuted, make sure that every bit of programming is recorded, and take your ERD (Emergency Robot Deactivator) and shoot the special alloy bullet in to your robot's centeral computer core. If that doesn't work... call 911 and, most of all, good luck.
