Higgs Boson Particle: Yes or No? (March 2012)

In "The Higgs Hunters," you read about the frantic search for the elusive "God particle," the Higgs boson. Some scientists believe that this tantalizing particle will be discovered before fall 2012--that's next school year! Leave a comment below to enter our super-scientific poll:

Will scientists find the Higgs boson before the end of 2012?

I think that we do have a pretty big chance of finding it, but it takes A LOT of research to discover something so tiny. There are very good chances that it does exist, but I don't know if we will be able to find it before fall 2012- we might be able to and that would be SUPER SUPER SUPER SUPER SUPER SUPER SUPER SUPER cool! (Yes, I admit it, I love science, especially physics and astronomy)

you are right!

Not sure... it would be VERY cool, but considering there haven't been any particular advances so far, it seems unlikely.

Oh, up, down, strange, charm, top, bottom
If you don't know what a quark is, it don't matter you still got 'em.
And with leptons and bosons, unless something's amiss,
They make up everything that we can see and that we know exists.

- Hank Green in his song "Strange Charm"

Go listen to it. Now.

I don't know when we'll find the Higgs, and I think that it's really hard to predict when science will discover/invent something. For example, an article was published just a while before the Wright Brothers flew the first airplane that it would take ages for man to fly.

So I don't even want to wager a guess about when we'll find the Higgs.

YAY! My tottaly amazing sister told me about that song, and I told all my friends about it. AH I LOVE SONGS LIKE THAT! Do you know about that history teacher who does songs? (I'm sort of more a history person... except for wars. I really don't like wars. They are usually really boring. I do like physics, alot. Don't you love alots!? [interobang] You should go on hyperbole and a half! Sorry, I love alot of things.) I probably should put in something about the higgs bosun, even though this is really late. I think it will probably be discovered soon-ish but not within this year, or even this decade.

Haha. The Higgs Bosun particle walked into the church. The minister said "You can't come in here, you call yourself the god particle, that's sacrilegious". The Higgs Bosun says "but without me, you can't have mass!"

Haha, I heard that one before from my friend!

YES YES YES YES!!!! Today, 4th of July, 2012, the people at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, have discovered a particle "consistent with the Higgs"!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are 99.999% sure they have found something new!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah I heard that too!  I hope it is the higgs bosun particle, that could mean a lot to future technological advancements.  Yay, technology!

Yes! In what form was that information released? Can we we read it? what exactly did they say? How long will it take them to confirm it?

It was in a yahoo article.  I can't quote it, and I'm not sure I can find the article again, but I bet if you look up something like "higgs bosun particle discovery" there will be articles all over the place.

It's spelled boson, just so we're all clear. A bosun is a certain officer on a boat. --Ed.
