Hi, I'm Big Loser Smith (May/June 2010)

Do you love your name? Do you hate your name? Did your parents give you a nice, normal sounding name--like "Bob"--only to ruin it with a crazy middle name, like "Antidisestablishmentarianism?" If you could choose any name in the world, what would it be?

I love my name because it means, gift of God and I am Christian so that is awsome!

but my brother's bus driver's last name is driver! so he is called MR. Driver and he is the bus driver!

The article says that baseball players with names starting with K are more likely to strike out. Well, wouldn't pitchers be more likely to strike people out? My name starts with a K, and I consistently strike my dad out 15% of the time, but I rarely strike out, maybe 4-7%.

Personally, I love my name. I've never met anyone named Helen that's younger than, say, 50 years. As a matter of fact, I've developed a sort of morbid obsession with the way my name's dying out. I check the obituaries fairly often, to see if any Helens have died. I know this sounds a bit strange, but you've probably done so before as well.

If I could change my name, I'd probably make it Caladhiel. (It's Sindarin for Light, which is what Helen means.)

Helen, I love your name too. It'll probably come back into fashion in a few years, though, because there's a phenomenon that names tend to resurrect every 100 or so years. It's because your own generation's names sound too common, your parents' too boring, your grandparents' too old, but your great-grandparents' names are interesting. I've tried it out, and it's true for me. (I love Margaret at the moment.)

Check out the "Baby Name Wizard," a really cool book and website that covers these kinds of things. The website is the obvious, the name of the book.

There's a series of books about Helen of Troy, the first one is called "Nobody's Princess". You should check it out. :)

I love my name too, and it also hard to find. Tiana is short for Christiana, though everyone keeps saying Christina. It drives me crazy! Tiana is easier to say, and to remember. Tiana is also a Native American moon Goddess, and my favorite Greek goddess is the goddess of the moon.

I like my name, because it's very unusual for a girl. I found out recently that it is from the Hebrew name "Elijah", which I find funny, since I'm not really very religious at all.

However, due to the general gender relationship with my name, it can sometimes be embarrassing. People assume I'm a boy if they read my name off a list. Once, we had a substitute who was calling people Mr. or Ms. (their last name). I was Mr. P. Got a lot of laughs. Oh well.

If I could be named anything, I'd want to be named Max. XD I found out later that if I had been a boy, that's what my parents would have named me. Maxwell Keegan. I was a little freaked out at first, but I continue to love the name.

I totally understand! My name is a boy's name too! (Well, technically, it can be a girl's name, but it's unusual.) But with mine, if I just tell people my name, they think it's an abrrieviation (K.C.) or Kasey. However, I dislike my name for both reasons. If I could be named anything, I would have a hard time deciding! But probably Emily, because it's fairly popular, but not so popular I'll meet, like, 5 other people with that name.

Interesting question. My initals are CEG, C scale on the piano, and I became first chair playing scales. (It wasn't the C scale, and it was saxophone, not piano, but still!) I like my name all right, but if I had to choose another, I would choose... drumroll please... anything starting with the letter R. Or perhaps I would choose Alexandria. My name means Son of Adam when you spell out the full thing of Addison, and when just Addie it means Dark and Rich! Addison is a males name, while Addie is a female! There are so many differences, when the two names I go by are so similar!

I just got Muse from the library and this issue looks tailor-made for me!!!  THANK YOU, MUSE!!!!!  I am obsessed with nomenclature and entymology (or etymology...I mean words, not bugs!) [Etymology. Bugs is entomology. --Ed.] and anyways...my name, Emily, is kind of common.  I don't like being common.  It is youngish but not at all unusual, which bugs me.  Therefore, I change my usernames as often as possible!!  I live among friends who agree about the randomness of everything, and when I recently asked my friend Misha for a new nickname, she gave me "Queen of Randomness"!  The thing I do like about the commonness of my name is ho hard I am to stalk.  If you googled my name, you would find thousands of entries...on completely different people than me.  I g2g now, lunchtime.  Tacos.  My preferred nickname is Emilissima M...Latin for "the most Emily."

My name is Sylvia, after my great grandmother (you're right that greatgrandparents' names sound coolest, but then again, I may be slightly biased). My name is Latin, meaning imp of or living in the forest, healthy and graceful. It's perfect because I love the idea of mystical creatures and enchanted forests. Also, I'm a dancer and I pride myself on being graceful and healthy because of so much exercise and training. My name in itself is very rare, but a variant, Sylvie, is a common French name. It's great because I love French, it takes me about a half hour to switch my brain back to english after French class. I don't know what name I'd want, something with a Z, an R that you can roll and it must be one syllable or shortenable. Maybe Zara. My middle name is Marie, after my poor dad with seven sisters who all shared the same middle name with him: Maria.

I love the name Sylvia. My brother has lately been singing a song called "Sylvia." I agree with you and others that great-grandparents names are great. 2 of my great grand-mother's names are Irene and Margaret.

My name, Catherine, means Blessed, pure, or holy, which I think kinda rocks. I'm named after both of my grandmother's middle names. My mom's mom's middle name is Catherine, and my dad's mom's middle name is Maxine (my middle name). Maxine means "Greatest" in french. If I had been a boy I would've been Patrick Edward. My grandmothers are Patricia and Nedra (nicknamed Ned). Patrick is the male form of Patricia and Ned, as a boy, can be a nick name for Edward. Patrick means noble and Edward means Blessed gaurdian.

If I could pick another name it would be Irene Jesse.

This happened because my parents wanted to call me Jack, short for John, but my parents friends were having a child at the same time and named him John Michael, wanting to call him Jack too. My parents didn't want me to have the same name as one of my best friends, so they decided to call me Benjamin. First of all, my name is not really "Anonymus," just that my name is so unusual, and nobody wants a stranger knowing who they are.

It is to my experience that people with strange names actually recieve more attention from teachers. This works strangely, because it depends on your behaviour. If you goof off, the teacher is more apt to give you a punishment. But, if you do well, the teacher is more likely to like you.

I do like my real name. I wouldn't trade it for big loser smith, or anything else.

I absolutley love my name, Kiley. It means beautiful girl in Ireland. Also my middle and last name represent who I am. My dad's from Mexico, so no wonder my middle name is Angelina (pronounced an-hel-leen-a) and my last name is Torres. Angelina means girl angel in Mexico.

I do not agree with how baseball players tend to strikeout if their name starts with K. When I play Wii ( I am an avid fan)I strike home runs. My brother Nathan is the one who strikes out. I do agree, though, that naming a child Big Loser Smith could contribute to his downfall (I, even though I am not a bully, would throw a pie at him).I just don't see how someone (like my friend) would be ashamed to have a simply wondrous name like Avery, or Katrina(Katrina;the most brave, heroic type of name).

If a could have a different name, I would suggest Brooklyn or some exotic, soothing name. as for you, Helen, I think Helen is a perfect name ( I greatly admire Helen Keller). You could be just like her! Except for going blind and deaf, which is a downfall for having the name Helen.

P.S. I don't know if you can see it through my words, but I simply admire exquisite literature.

If I could have the name of a Greek Goddess....probably Selene, the original moon goddess before Artemis...oooh! Maybe Persephone, the Goddess of Spring. Or Pomona, the Roman Goddess of Plenty (Plenty video games would be awesome)...I think I'll go with either Selene or Amphitrite, the Goddess of the Sea. Yeah...Amphitrite would be awesome...Though, if I could make up my own goddess, I'd be Kitkat, the Goddess of Candy! I'd be a blessing among children. The reason I chose Kitkat as my code name is because my initials spell out KAT. Original, not like the boring, pleasing CAT initials...speaking of which, I have a friend who's initials spell out CAT...KAT and CAT, the catlike friends! My name is Bhramari. The odd thing about my name is I think I'm the first person to have my name who was born in america. My name means bumblebee in Sanscrit. (Many people have tried to call me that as a nickname, but it has too many syllables for my taste) Also, when I was born, my grandfather put a birth announcement in an indian newspaper (my mother immigrated to america when she was 9. She met my dad at college). Another couple in india decided they liked the name and named their un-born kid that. So therefore, I have a namesake.

I absolutely LOVE my name. It means victory, and I like to win, so that's good! It's also an uncommon name, so I feel special among all of the Jacobs and Sarahs in my school. It's awesome to be a Victoria because there are many landmarks named after Queen Victoria - Victoria Falls, Lake Victoria, etc. Do any of you have names that are also place names? I totally hate it when people call me Vicky. It just doesn't fit me. Are there nicknames that just don't fit you, too? If you have an uncommon name like me, do you like it or do you wish you had a more normal name?
