Creatures of the Hydrothermal Vents (February 2012)

If you could journey to the deepest, darkest depths of the ocean, you'd probably find creatures that no one on earth has ever seen before. In "Living in the Dark" (page 6), you saw stone crabs, bone-eating worms, hagfish, and other scary-looking creatures that survive around the mineral-rich, super-hot "hydrothermal vents" that support deep-sea life. What would you discover around the hydrothermal vents? What would you name your creature? What does it look like--and what does it eat?

I do not have the urge to find a new sea creature. Squids are all I need, right?

But if I did find a creature, I would leave the naming to someone else, since people find such joy in naming things for themselves. The creature would be paper thin and very flat. Its entire structure would be made of eyes, with a very microscopically thin layer in between for its brain. It is hundreds of miles across and nobody has discovered it yet because it eats the microscopic particles which live in sand, and sand settles on top of it. Unbeknownst to it, it has many ecosystems living on its back. It lives for twenty to thirty thousand years.

Hi, it's me again. Thank u Editors! My Dad is gonna call CS. Probably on Fri., since @ the moment he's on a buissness trip to Buffalo. Fellow 4th graders of NYC, join in the chant! NO MORE STATE TESTS! NO MORE STATE TESTS! Yep, I would call myself, but ELA STs! All week. Anyway... sea creature... hmmm... how about this? Its a pink bunny... but it has cute little fins and a tail! I mean, pink bunnies allready have tails, but this one has a fishy tail. I would call it Mermaidisis pinkalis bunnyapolis, but that would be it's latin name too. Ooh, Koko, Chad, Pwt, see if u can make this work...PIE THROWING PINK BUNNIES. Pwt can see if it already exists, and if it doesn't Koko and Chad can make it real. By the way, Pwt, how do u pronounce your name?
