All About Aliens (September 2010)

Dear Muse-lings,

I want to hear your thoughts on outer space. Do you believe in aliens? If extraterrestrial life is out there, what do you think it will be like? Green, big-headed, and bug-eyed? Small, pipe-playing, and pie-throwing? Talk to me.

Your favorite Muse of astronomy (and alien afficionado),
Urania

no, i dont believe in aliens, but um, what was i gonna type?................................................................................................ oh yeah!

the movie Alien is really cool and freakish, but still awesome yet scary.

i bet green. but they could look like humans. would it be cool, if there was entire world out there that functioned exactly like us, looked like us, functioned like us, and think the same way as us, that we dont know about? but back to the reply, do you like Mac N' Cheese?

I think there is life somewhere in space. I mean, just look at how big space is! There has to be life somewhere else besides Earth. I bet there may even be life forms out in space wondering the same thing as us... Is there life on any planet besides ours? Maybe there's some planet whose residents are far more technologically advanced than us are are wondering, Um, hello! We're right here! Why can't you find us? Oh, yeah, because you're still using computers. I forgot. Sorry! Who really knows? I don't like how scientists sometimes say, "There couldn't be life on this planet because its too hot." or anything like that. Just because there couldn't be human life doesn't mean there can't be any intelligible life forms. I could go on and on, but this is  web post, not an essay, so I'll stop typing now...

submitted by Caroline G, age 12, NC
(September 13, 2010 - 7:43 pm)

You're right. We don't have anything much to base on when we decide if a planet can support life. Even if 300 degrees can't support humans, it might be perfect for another intelligent life form. We only make the judgments based on our knowledge of earth survival. I think it's interesting that we seem to only be looking for planets similar to our own when we think of looking for life in outer space.

Heyhi, Muse peeeps!!!!! I most certainly think there is life because of how big the universe is. I think that aliens would live on the moon Europa. That's one of Saturn's moons. But, I think that they are still tiny bacteria, and haven't evolved into whatever they will look like yet, so that's why the scientists can't find them. Because a tiny little bacterium couldn't care less!

submitted by Janisa, age who cares?, oh,whoops maybe you do
(September 11, 2010 - 1:14 pm)

I totally agree that if there is life somewhere else in our solar system, it would be on Europa. I'm pretty sure that there is water there, like ice. Water usually means life. And yes, it probably is bacteria.

Also, why does everyone always stereotype aliens with having much more advanced technology than we do? Every book you read, there's always some sort of vaporiser, silent hovercraft, something we have yet to invent here. But why does everyone think that? Yes, there could be some, but how do we know that there is not intelligent life fairly new to a planet that is still in the Stone Age?

submitted by Luna, age some number, Hogwarts
(October 22, 2011 - 8:00 pm)

Yes, I believe in aliens. They can look like anything. Under Europa, there could be animals resembling squid, octopi, tube worms! Anything! But since the universe is so vast, how could there not be any life more advanced than we are? Maybe they have already contacted us many many years ago. How long could they keep up with contacting us over and over again? And, do they have to be solid? They can be gases, or liquids. Urania, as the muse of space, couldn't you just spare the trouble and tell us!

Oh well. Pwt PWNs, Feather the fantastic, admirable Aeiou, Kookin' Koko, calibrating Chad, cawin' Crraw, something Urania, Meek Mimi, and bhgfdhf Bo.

duh! of course I believe in extraterrestrial life! The question is, do the little bacteria thingies that live on mars believe that we, (the extramartian life) exist? BUT I do believe in the giant aliens whose gym locker we live in and in the tiny aliens who live in my gym locker.

I am only a novice Man In Black (or in my case: Attention Deficit and Paranoia ridden preteen believer in conspiracy theories and scary cool sci fi horror movies(Just try making a movie about that!(and I also do not like math but looooove science)))

THANK YOU FOR THE COMPLIMENT!!!

I am the aliens' contact here on Earth. When they come, they will make peace in all the countries, clean up the oil spill, and use their alien technology to solve the global warming-DON'T DENY IT IS A PROBLEM. THEN the aliens will take over the world. Because if you're the leader of a place and it has problems, they'll blame you, but if you solve their problems and THEN take control, they'll love you already and you'll have instant popularity. They are giving me New Zealand to rule over.

Of course I believe in ailens! I mean, gosh, we were made out of STARDUST so where did the rest of it go? JUST to planets? Noooooooooooo............... to other life forms too! I think that (got this out of a book) if they live on high gravity planets (I hope they'd be almost like me except for the colors) they'd be tall, spindly, and PINK or PURPLE. If they lived on Low Gravity planets, they'd be short, sorta fat, and I just can't remember what color. So don't ask. Make it up. ANYWAY, they'd be nice and one could live in our house. (It'd be awesome, huh?) My friend dosen't believe and won't no matter how much convincing. I read in a NON FICTION space book that if there was a solar system from the second nearest star, Proxima Centuri, they'd take 11 years to reach the Earth. But we don't think they'll be coming in 2011... sad. BELIEVE PLEASE! -Lili

Hmmm.... I think that there's definetly SOMETHING out there, because it would be waaaaaaaay too depressing if we were the only intelligent life in the entire universe. There's a huge possibility that there's intelligent life somewhere other that earth, and it actually seems more ridiculous (to me) that there's not any intelligent life than there is. I don't have any idea where it could be, though.

I do have a question - why does it have to be so that the aliens are more tecchnologically advanced that us? Why can't there be a planet with intelligent life that is still discovering the telephone (or their alien equivalent) and THAT'S why they haven't contacted us?

In the meantime, I really like scifi shows like Doctor Who and Star Trek with aliens in them. They're awesome. XD

Maybe they're less than a century behind us, and at this very moment while I type this, they're launching a moon mission to their moon!!

I know how you feel... Once in second or third grade, there was this kid at school named Ben. And he was talking about aliens, and I said,"Why do they have to be all high-tech and lasery? Just because they come from another planet doesn't necessarily mean that they are more technologically advanced than us. Maybe they're just cave-aliens right now, and they're just discovering fire and bashing rocks together and drawing on cave walls and hunting prehistoric alien deer."Or I said something along those lines, and he said, "No. Aliens ALWAYS have laser guns and spaceships." And I thought, that doesn't seem right. And now I realize I was right.

HEY!! MAYBE SOMEDAY THOSE BACTERIA ON MARS WILL EVOLVE INTO INTELLIGENT BEINGS!! AND THEN WE CAN COMMUNICATE WITH THEM!!! IN LIKE A ZILLION YEARS!!

I think aliens might exist, but in another solar system, not ours. They'd have to be suited to the conditions they live in, so, what they look like depends on what their planet is like. What kinda bothers me is that everyone thinks of aliens as small, brightly colored beings that are bald and have weird eyes. What if they're not? What if they're tall and gray and hairy? (just an example).

Hi, I'm an alien. My name is pronounced Kay-FYO-nah and góßa is pronounced RO-fi. In your language I would probably spell my name Kaefiona and I would spell góßa like this: roefy which is an awesome-looking word.

I put THE AWESOME PLANET DEMETER in the City/State box 'cuz that's where I live and I don't want to get too specific cuz if I wrote exactly where I live it would take up a lot of space. This is about where I live:

Dÿmånr

Section 321, code 22.33ß,  444øppølœ

Basically that means I live in Section 321 of Demeter and my rank code is 22.33 and I live in the 'city' thingy of Oppoli which is how it's pronounced and I am person number 444 of the 'city' of Oppoli and I don't expect you humans to understand any of this.

Anyway, yes I am an alien. Demeter is actually IN you guys' solar system. I don't know why you haven't noticed. We are a bit smaller than humans and we have much bigger hands and feet and eyes. We have SHARP teeth and fingernails. We're like cuttlefish! We can change color! We all have really poofy hair. I speak English and I have a computer cuz I was part of a research trip that went from Demeter to 'Earth'. I stayed there for 5 whole years, and then we got the whole 'internet' thing set up, and it's so cool! Earthlings, you helped us BECOME AWARE OF MUSE.

P.S. A roefy is about 6 earth years.

P.P.S. There are other aliens out there, too, but you'll have to take my word for it 'cuz they're really well hidden.

Aliens must exist, because the chances of us being the only living things in the Universe in next to none. Like absolutely none. The Universe is so absolutely huge that NOBODY (not even me) can ever imagine just how huge it is. Think Earth from the perspective of bacteria. Then think that to the googleplex-th power. You can't, by the way, so that was just an example. Anyway, how can there not be aliens? And why do we all think of them as green people with laser guns? Maybe their planets have some other power source that we haven't even imagined yet, and the thought of laser technology hasn't even crossed their mind yet. Or perhaps they aren't as war-minded as Earthlings, and would have no need for such things. Why are they short, when their gravity is a mystery to everyone on Earth? Why are they green, when they might have evolved skin that refracts light? I know this sounds wild (We can't figure out how to do that yet!) but think, we are all comparing this to life on our own planet. There are probably green, short, skinny aliens with bulbous heads and giant eyes out there, but chances are we won't find them anytime soon.
