Pretty Gross

art by Kathryn T., age 10, IndianaOwl pellets are so gross! It's like dissecting owl throw up. Inside it is hairy because the owl eats mice and other animals with hair. It is also gross because the thought of touching and separating the owl's regurgitation is disgusting.

Owls eat some very unusual things. Not only are the animals they eat gross but are things humans wouldn't eat. Try dissecting something you would not want to have for lunch.

Just think--even if you did have dissecting tools, you still wouldn't want to do it. Owls may not think the things they eat are gross. But they are.

Owl pellets may be gross but they are beautiful in a way too. The bones from the animals they eat tell us what types of owls eat this animal. It is also beautiful because scientists can identify what animal the bones came from. The owl might have eaten more than one animal that were different species.

Some owls may eat something that isn't even food. Think how happy you would be if you found something valuable in your owl pellet. Owl pellets can be gross but beautiful at the same time. Who knows, maybe you will find something interesting while dissecting an owl pellet.
