Experiments

Studies In Human Behavior: Experiment B

In which a person searching for a certain object is surprised to find it encased in flavored gelatin.

Materials:

  • Something your target is not currently using, but is likely to want in the next day or two, such as a stapler, keys, or a serving spoon. (Items that will be damaged by water, such as a checkbook, cell phone, or household pet, should NOT be used.)
  • A large bowl
  • Plastic wrap
  • At least 3 boxes of Jell-O, all the same flavor
  • Large plate or serving tray

Procedure:

  1. Line the bowl completely with plastic wrap.
  2.  Prepare one box of Jell-O according to the directions on the package.
  3. Pour the prepared Jell-O into the bowl (it should only be about three inches, or 7.5cm, deep) and leave in the refrigerator for a few hours, until very solid.
  4. If you plan on eating the Jell-O, wash the stapler or other object. Take the bowl out of the fridge and place the object upside-down on top of the solid Jell-O layer.
  5. Prepare the remaining two boxes of Jell-O and pour into the bowl. Refrigerate overnight.
  6. Gently turn the bowl upside-down onto the plate or tray. Remove the bowl and plastic wrap from the Jell-O mold, making sure not to break it.
  7. Your mold can be left in a refrigerator for your target to find, served to your target for dessert, or presented as a gift.

Questions:

  • What color of Jell-O provides maximum comic effect?
  • How many times can you repeat this before it stops being funny?

This experment takes a while. If you can wait extensive periods of time wondering about the victim's expression the it it TOTALLY WORTH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Couldn't you wrap an object in plastic wrap to make sure it doesn't get wet? You know, like serve their phone to them, and then text them. That would be SO FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
